Artist Note
This delightful, rarely produced opera by Lukas Foss has a band of devils, a dancing toy store, a singing mailbox, a fountain angel and stone lions that come to life. The director Linda Brovsky set it in New York City and asked me to dress the young devil Griffelkin (gorgeously sung by Anthony Roth Costanzo) and his cohorts in punk style. The singers at Manhattan School of Music were fearless about wearing the insane looks I dreamed up for them, and after working hard with our choreographer Tom Gold, they were dancing like they were on Broadway! The biggest thrill was when Lukas Foss and his family came to see the show opening night.
